Spider veins are often confused with varicose veins. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels – when they become enlarged, it is known as ‘telangetasia’, or more commonly known as spider veins. They tend to be a cosmetic issue, but may be an indicator of varicose veins forming deeper under the skin.
Symptoms
- Small, short, jagged veins that appear close to the surface of the skin
- Mild burning or tingling sensation
Spider veins can be a sign of underlying circulation issues, so more severe symptoms may include symptoms similar to varicose veins:
- Achy, heavy legs
- Pain while sitting or standing for long periods of time
- Throbbing sensation
Diagnosis
- Spider Veins can usually be diagnosed with a physical exam, since they are located near the surface of the skin.
- To determine the type of treatment needed, your doctor might want to view the veins while you are sitting and standing to notice any changes.
- If you are experiencing pain (more than just slight discomfort), an ultrasound might be ordered to determine if there are more serious underlying issues.
Treatments
- Sclerotherapy
- Vein Wave laser therapy
- Compression hose
